ASU's Happe, Geren earn Capital One Academic T&F All-America honors

Nick Happe and Sarah Geren have been selected to 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men's and women's track and field/cross country teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. 

Happe earned a first-team selection for the Sun Devil cross country and track and field program while Geren was a third-team selection.

The Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in both cross country and track, Happe recorded a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. in accountancy and graduated from esteemed Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State.

The St. Charles, Mo. native won the Pac-12 outdoor title in the 5,000 meters and also scored in the 1,500.  Happe, who earned NCAA All-American honors in the indoor 3,000 meters, was the first individual in school history to post top-five indoor marks in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. He was a second team All-Pac-12 and All-West Region cross country performer.

Happe will continue his postgraduate work at the Notre Dame Law School beginning in Fall of 2013.  His selection on the Academic All-America team marked the third time in his career he has been honored by the program and the first time he has been a first-team selection. 

Geren, a junior, earned the first nod of her career at the All-America team with her third-team honors.

The Horizon High School product holds a 4.00 G.P.A. as she works toward a degree in conservation biology with a minor in anthropology. She is also a student at venerable Barrett, The Honors College. 

Geren was a member of 4x400-meter relay team that finished second at the Pac-12 Championships this season with a time of 3:32.53, the ninth-best time in school history. She also scored in the 400m at the Pac-12 Championships.  She also earned second-team All-America honors as part of 4x400 relay indoors following 12th-place finish. 

Happe and Geren mark Arizona State's 110th and 111th Academic All-Americans in history since the program began in 1952. They bring the tally of total Academic All-Americans for the Track and Field and Cross Country programs to 23, with 16 of those coming in the past six seasons. 

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
