PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Just several hours after setting the U.S. Open record in morning prelims, Arizona rising senior Kevin Steel turned heads once again by shattering his own record in the finals of the 50 breast at the Phillips 66 Nationals and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis on Thursday evening.

Steel blasted the sprint breaststroke event with a time of 27.26. That swim downed his U.S. Open record of 27.33 from prelims, which broke the previous best mark of 27.34 set by Mark Gangloff. The performance also puts him in position to qualify for the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain next month. Steel's time also jumped him to third in the world behind only Christian Sprenger (26.90) and Joao Gomes (27.20). After already qualifying for the FINA World Championships with a record breaking victory in the 200 breast last night, Kevin Cordes finished just behind Steel in second place with a time of 27.38. Meanwhile, Carl Mickelson earned a seventh place finish with a time of 28.35.

Tucson Ford's Christine Magnuson followed up her 50 fly victory from last night with a fifth place showing in the 100 fly with a time of 59.30. In the same event, rising senior Giles Smith clocked in with a time of 52.94 to finish in seventh place.

To close out the night, Matt Grevers earned a second place finish in the 50 back with a time of 24.77 and Mitchell Friedemann finished eighth with a time of 25.60.  The event continues tomorrow with the 400 free, 100 breast and 100 back.

NBC will cover the event Saturday, June 29 from 1-2:30 p.m. ET. Beginning at 11:00 p.m. ET there will be one-hour coverage on NBC Sports Network.  Additionally, USA Swimming will offer a live webcast of the entire meet at usaswimming.org/nationals. Each day, prelims begin at 9 a.m. ET, followed by finals at 6 p.m. ET.
