CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

An Avondale playground is badly damaged in an overnight fire.

A fire broke out overnight at the William DeHart Hubbard Playground on Blair Street.

Officials with the Cincinnati Rec Commission say the fire destroyed the area used by the 2- to-5-year-olds. The climber for 5-to-12-year-old sustained minor damage but it is still usable.

Staff is working to remove the destroyed playground and burnt mulch this week and spread new mulch next week to get the area back to playable condition.

A spokesperson for CRC says they do not have plans to replace the lost playground as of right now but they will reassess the budget this fall to try to include a replacement.

Damage is estimated at $40,000.

The playground is named for William DeHart Hubbard, a Cincinnati native and the first African American to win an Olympic gold medal.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
