Businesses frustrated as Conant St construction gets extended

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

There's no problem getting a table at La Fiesta Restaurant in Maumee. Business is slow inside the place, just like the traffic creeping along outside on Conant Street.

"It's Friday. 5:00. Usually we got at least 20 tables filled, but now we've only got four or five," said owner Carlos Fuente.

And it's been that way since March. Conant Street is in the middle of a $3 million repaving project stretching from the Anthony Wayne Trail to the Ohio Turnpike.

Sidewalks are being added, as well as barrier islands.

Fuente says he feels as though he's trapped on an island secluded from customers. Business is off 40 percent.

"Not really good news if you have to pay rent, pay for power, pay the employees and not get enough business," he said.

The project was supposed to be wrapped up next week. Word from the City of Maumee is that the date has been pushed back until the end of July.

Officials say the project was slowed by rainy April weather. In addition, contractors ran into some utility issues.

Fuente says Maumee needs to put some pressure on the contractor to finish the project.

"You never know when you're going to get busy because sometimes when they're working here and there's only four guys working on the whole road, you can't get anything done with four guys on construction," he said.

Until it's finished, Conant Street will resemble a parking lot at times while Fuente waits for customers to pull into his.
