SUV rams into apartment where woman was sleeping

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Residents have been displaced after an SUV crashed into the Pine Trace Apartments Friday afternoon.

The driver of the SUV, Keith Richardson, was pulled over and cited in May for driving without a license.

After crashing into the apartment of Veronica Alexander, who was sleeping on her couch at the time, Richardson attempted to back out, but was stopped by a neighbor.

"He was saying he wanted to back the truck out, and I was thinking, like, maybe that's not such a good idea," said Earl Wilson.

Wilson heard the Ford Explorer crash into the apartment on Collingwood Boulevard, and ran to the scene to help.

"Then when I got up to the building, I was so scared there was going to be a lot of people or kids and I was just so happy to hear that there was only one person, and she was visible and accessible," Wilson said.

Wilson helped Alexander get out from under the SUV. She was taken to the hospital, but police say she only received minor injuries.

Just before the accident, Dorcas Stephens witnessed Richardson arguing with a woman nearby.

"As it was going on, as he was shooting across the street, I noticed he was headed towards the building," Stephens said. "So I immediately started to run over here, because I knew he was going to hit something and somebody was going to be hurt."

Richardson was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Other residents in the building have been displaced.

"He actually hit a load-bearing wall," said Toledo Fire Chief David Rodriguez. "It was an actual beam structure that distributes the weights. We had to evacuate at least four units for the safety."

The incident is also being investigated to determine if Richardson was under the influence at the time. Charges are pending.
