PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A newly released police report on a fatal crash on Interstate 17 says the suspect was believed to be speeding and intoxicated when he struck the back of a used car driven by a mechanic.

Victor House, 61, of Phoenix was driving the car for a woman who had bought the car in Prescott and was checking out the road worthiness of the vehicle by driving it to Phoenix. A speeding 1988 GMC SUV lost control and rear-ended the car about 11:20 p.m. on I-17 near Daisy Mountain, said Bart Graves of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The impact caused the white sedan to spin out violently and land in the desert off the side of the highway, Graves said. The woman, who was in front of House in another vehicle, was not hurt.

The driver in the SUV, Carl William Day, 27, of Gilbert, tried to crawl out and escape but witnesses said he was caught and held by passing motorists until Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies and DPS officers arrived, Graves said.

According to the police report, Day was combative with medical staff and witnesses and his preliminary blood test showed a BAC of .26. The legal limit is .08.

He suffered minor injuries and was taken to John C. Lincoln-North Hospital for treatment.

Graves said the suspect had a warrant for his arrest on drug charges out of California.

Southbound I-17 was closed until about 6:30 a.m., but the northbound lanes remained open.
