NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -
A Meriden man was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in a residential neighborhood that left one man dead late Sunday night.
Police said they received a call at about midnight from people reporting that shots were fired along Kelsey Street. When they arrived at the scene, they said they found a man, who was later identified as 18-year-old Issaac Smith of New Britain, suffering from a gunshot wound in his driveway.
"I thought it was firecrackers," resident Tonya Hancock said. "I never thought they would be gunshots."
Emergency officials rushed Smith to New Britain hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Jonathan Gibbs, 26, was arrested Monday and charged with murder. Gibbs, who has no previous convictions, is being held on $3 million bond and is expected to be arraigned in New Britain Superior Court Tuesday.
Police said they don't believe this is a random shooting.
"This is a very friendly neighborhood," resident Kimberly Haughten. "A lot of parents don't even walk their kids to the bus stop. They just let them go. So now it's concerning to think that people are shooting people up in the streets."
Sunday's shooting was the first homicide in New Britain in 13 months.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the New Britain Police Department at 860-826-3131.
