Grand Canyon University freshman outfielder Brandon Smith garnered All-Tournament Team honors at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, co-hosted by the Town of Cary and Mount Olive College at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Tampa defeated Minnesota State - Mankato today, 8-2, to claim the 2013 national title.
The Antelopes went 1-2 at the tournament, dropping a tough first game to St. Edward's (1-0) before rebounding with an impressive 10-2 win over Coker College. St. Edward's beat GCU for the second time (9-5) as the 'Lopes concluded the 2013 campaign with an impressive 40-19 overall record, their most wins since collecting 43 victories in 1990.
Smith started each of GCU's three games in left field and posted a .462 batting average (6-for-13) with a run scored, 2 doubles, and 3 RBI. He collected multi-hit games in each contest.
For the season, Smith hit .318 (54-for-170) with 31 runs, 10 doubles, a triple, home run, anr 33 RBI. He was also named to the NCAA Division II West Region All-Tournament Team after posting a .435 average (10-for-23) with 6 runs scored, 3 doubles, a triple, and 7 RBI.
