Grand Canyon University senior third baseman Derek Mendoza was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-American Division II Baseball First Team following a stellar campaign this season, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Tabbed as the Pacific West Conference Preseason Player of the Year, Mendoza helped guide the Antelopes to an impressive 40-19 overall record and was a key part of their run to the West Region Championship, earning a spot in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championhip for the first time in program history. He garnered NCAA Division II West Region All-Tournament Team honors after going 11-for-25 (.440) with 5 runs scored, 2 doubles, and 3 RBI.
Among his many accolades this season, the Interdisciplinary Studies major was a Daktronics First Team West All-Region selection and was tabbed as the best defensive third baseman in the region, garnering Rawlings/ABCA West Region Gold Glove honors.
Mendoza led the squad in a number of offensive categories, including: .366 batting average, 42 runs scored, 70 hits, 40 RBI, and a .436 on-base percentage. He posted the longest hitting streak for the ‘Lopes at 14 games and led the team with nine multi-RBI games. He had the second-most multi-hit games at 19, while his 19 straight games of reaching base also represented the second longest on the squad.
Among PacWest Conference batters, he ranked fourth in triples (3), seventh in batting average, eighth in RBI, and 10th in on-base percentage.
Defensively, he posted a .927 fielding percentage with 25 putouts and 90 assists in 124 total chances. Mendoza had a stretch of 15 consecutive errorless games from March 8-30 and in total, saw action in 54 games defensively.
