The former New Milford police officer convicted of negligent homicide after a 1998 on-duty shooting has been found dead.
The News Times of Danbury reports Scott Smith was found in his bed Tuesday morning by firefighters after friends reported they could not contact him. He was 41. The cause of his death is under investigation.
Smith was charged with murder after shooting 19-year-old Franklyn Reid to death on Dec. 27, 1998 during a foot chase. Reid was wanted by police for failing to appear in court and for probation violations.
Evidence showed Reid was on the ground and shot in the back at close range. Smith said he feared Reid had a weapon.
Smith pleaded guilty in 2004 to negligent homicide and was sentenced to two years probation.
