'Sky Cop' cameras will be able to detect gunshots

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police are expanding their Sky Cop camera initiative to include more areas of the city.

About a year after the crime cameras were first installed, TPD has started setting up the second wave. Some of them will not only be able to see crime, but hear it, as well, with gunshot detection capabilities.

"How that works, is there's acoustics on the camera that, when a shot is fired within a certain range of the camera, the camera will pick up the sound of the gunshot, pan, tilt, zoom the camera to the location of the gunshot, and hopefully catch the person shooting on camera," explained Captain Mike Troendle. "Yes, we do have shootings in the city, there's no doubt about it. But we're doing things to address those shootings."

In the past week, police have added four new cameras, and will be adding over 70 more, including another new mobile unit. That will bring their numbers to 150 cameras.

"It's exciting that we're undertaking such a big project, and we are making it happen," Troendle said.
