Yale graduation adds to traffic nightmare in New Haven
By WFSB Staff
NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
New Haven police are advising anyone driving through the city on Monday that they will encounter heavy traffic delays because of a number of factors, including the train derailment in Bridgeport Friday afternoon.
New Haven police said graduation exercises, Route 34 ramp closures, Harbor Crossing construction work, scheduled utility work and the suspended rail service have all contributed to the traffic delays in the Elm City.
Both the New Haven Police Department and the Yale University Police Department have posted officers at traffic posts throughout the downtown area, but officials said the actual task of directing motorists from one congested street to another is proving to be slow going.
"We were fortunate," said Jack Biondo, of Baltimore. "We got here before the actual derailment."
Biondo said he planned on having more family and friends at the ceremony, but he said there just wasn't another way.
"My mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law were scheduled for the train on Sunday, and of course it was canceled."
Motorists are being advised to avoid Elm Street and Broadway, and Prospect Street as a route to access downtown.
"It took my planning on a little bit of a sidetrack," Bernedette Murphy, of Washington, D.C. said. "They're doing everything they can to try to help."
Thousands of out-of-state parents have been flooding the city to see their child and loved ones graduate from the prestigious university.
