CT Fastrack construction project moving along

NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

Construction on the controversial busway is pretty much on schedule, according to an official with the Department of Transportation.

CT Fastrak is a 9-mile-long express busway that will run from New Britain to downtown Hartford.

A lot of construction was needed at the intersections of Route 9 and 72 in New Britain, with demolition and reconstruction of the bridge as well as off- and on-ramps.

What has helped speed construction is the amount of materials that are being built off site and trucked to the various locations along the nine-plus miles.

It's a total redesign of mass transit in the region, according to DOT officials, and they said they think of it as a whole new system.

"There's express buses from Waterbury. There's expanded express service from Cheshire and Southington and Bristol," said Michael Sanders of Connecticut DOT. "There are connecting buses in Hartford. We have a hospital shuttle that connects at Sigourney Street."

Presently in this corridor there are currently about 8,000 passenger boardings. When the project is completed that's expected to double.

"With buses that are relocating to the guide way itself, as well as new services, we'll be putting in extended hours of services during the day as well as weekend services. We expect ridership to go up to about 16,000 boardings a day," Sanders said.

One of the more dramatic sites is in West Hartford, where Flatbush Avenue will go over the busway and railroad tracks.

"Segments will start being completed early next year, but the end of 2014 is construction completion," Sanders said.
