Volunteers help prepare for accident victim's homecoming

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Michael Owens, 28, is learning how to walk again, after a tragic accident took both his legs.

We showed you his father's home -- and what needed to be done to prepare for his arrival.

Since that story aired, you have responded!

This morning, volunteers from MLGW and MIFA helped build and install a wooden ramp for Michael's wheelchair.

Inside the home, volunteers have widened two of the doorways and laid tile in the hallway and bedroom where Michael will stay.

They also have plans to remodel the bathroom, adding a walk-in shower for Michael.

His father, Michael Toles, is grateful for the outpouring of support.

"I thank everybody. Everybody for their prayers, everything that they've done," he said.

"It just touched our hearts and Mike is overwhelmed too and he is looking forward to coming home."

Michael Owens was expected to come home next week, but his father says that may be delayed a few days until the bathroom remodel is complete.
