Rockslide will close Smith Co. highway for weeks

Posted: Updated:

A road in Smith County is blocked after a large rockslide early Thursday morning.

All lanes on State Route 25 are closed near the Cumberland River Overlook and south of Massey Road.  The slide occurred around 5 a.m.

The two-lane highway runs alongside a steep bluff where the slide occurred.

Emergency Management Director Sonny Carter said slides are common at this location, but this is the biggest one in recent memory.

Crews with the Tennessee Department of Transportation are accessing the damage to determine how long it will take to reopen the road. Equipment has arrived at the scene to help with the cleanup.

"This is an area that we already had our eye on months ago," said TDOT spokeswoman Deanna Lambert. "Thankfully, mother nature has made our job a little easier. Now we just have to clean it up."

Heavy rains in the past month likely contributed to the slide, said Carter.

As a detour, drivers are advised to use State Route 263 (Main Street/Hartsville Pike/Turkey Creek Road) to State Route 85 (Defeated Creek Highway) to State Route 80 (Pleasant Shade Highway).

TDOT said it will probably take about two weeks to clear the debris. Crews estimate 15,000 cubic yards of limestone fell in the slide, which is about 165 feet long.
