Grand Canyon University head men's basketball coach Dan Majerle today announced that Akachi Okugo has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Antelopes squad for 2013-14.
"What sold me on Akachi was the way he communicates," said Majerle. "He is very confident young man and a true winner. He is a floor general who is very competitive and will make everyone around him better."
Okugo, a 6-1 guard from Sacramento, Calif., played last season at Yuba College in Marysville, Calif. He averaged 12.7 points and 6.3 assists in 27 games. Okugo led the team, shooting 82.4 percent (112-for-136) from the line. He earned First Team All-State honors, as well as the Most Valuable Player award for the Bay Valley Conference.
Prior to his time at Yuba College, Okugo was four-year varsity player at Jesuit High School in Carmichael, Calif. There he averaged 14.0 points and 7.0 assists per game during his senior season. Okugo was selected to the Sac-Joaquin Section All-League Basketball Team during his sophomore and senior campaigns.
Okugo was Majerle's second signing, having inked Joshua Braun, a 6-4 guard from Anthem, Ariz., on May 1.
