WOODBRIDGE, CT (WFSB) -

The Democratic party in Woodbridge appointed a candidate to fill the vacancy left after the town's first selectman died suddenly earlier this week.

Edward Maum Sheehy died suddenly on Monday night, but town officials did not say what led to his death.

According to the Woodbridge Connecticut Democrats' website, Sheehy served as first selectman of Woodbridge since 2006.

On Jan. 17, the Democratic caucus for the town was held and the party unanimously endorsed Sheehy for the May 6 municipal election.

On Thursday, Beth Heller, who has been a member of the board of selectmen since December 2008, was appointed to replace Sheehy.

A special meeting of the board of selectmen was held Thursday night.

Woodbridge is a smaller community with just under 10,000 residents and is located about five miles from New Haven.
