BOSTON (WFSB) -

A large turnout is expected for a memorial service for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer shot and killed in the aftermath of the Boston bombings.

Police said the Tsarnaev brothers, suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings, shot and killed 27-year-old Officer Sean Collier on Thursday night.

Thousands are expected in Boston to pay final respects to Collier, with police from all over planning to attend the ceremony, including officers from Middletown.

Collier's memorial service, which will be held at MIT's Briggs Field on Wednesday, will be only open to law enforcement and the MIT community.

Collier had only been an officer for about a year when he was shot numerous times while he sat in his car.

Middletown's police honor guard will bring their flags to Boston and their heartfelt sadness.

"It's going to show we stand for one another," said Middletown police Lt. Paul Maturo, who will travel to Boston with four other officers. "We stand for the country for what is right and what we are supposed to do."

Last year, Middletown officers went to Springfield, MA, to honor Kevin Ambrose, who was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call.

White House officials confirmed that Vice President Joe Biden will also be attending the funeral.
