The University of Arizona's Ben Kanute and the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs' Erin Jones won the draft-legal titles Friday in the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships.
Kanute finished the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run in 58 minutes, 26 seconds at Tempe Beach Park. Luke Farkas of Colorado-Colorado Springs was second in 58:40.
"It went perfectly," said Kanute, also set to compete Saturday in the Olympic-distance championship event. "We had a really good group that worked together and gave us enough time on everybody else. The run just felt great. I was cruising a little bit, and got to think about tomorrow a little, too."
Jones finished in 1:04:00. California's Erica Erickson was second in 1:04:23.
