Prosecutor warns against violating new drug law

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

The top prosecutor in Arizona's most populous county is warning sellers of synthetic versions of marijuana, ecstasy and cocaine that they could face prosecution under legislation recently signed into law.

The legislation took effect when Gov. Jan Brewer signed it a week ago. It expands the state's definition of dangerous drugs to include a wider variety of chemical configurations that make up synthetic drugs such as those known as "spice," `'K2" and `'bath salts."

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery says retailers and manufacturers are now on notice that they and their businesses face stiff sanctions for violations.

Montgomery says parents concerned about the availability of synthetic drugs in their neighborhoods should call local police if they see the drugs on shelves of corner markets, smoke shops or convenience stores.
