The Phoenix Coyotes insist they're not giving up on the season despite trading three veteran players for a minor leaguer and two draft picks.
Phoenix made three separate deals at Wednesday's trade deadline, sending Raffi Torres to San Jose, Matthew Lombardi to Anaheim and Steve Sullivan to New Jersey.
All three forwards will become unrestricted free agents in the offseason and the prospects of re-signing them were not good for a team that's being run by the NHL for the fourth straight season.
Assistant general manager Brad Treliving said the moves also were made to give younger players from their AHL affiliate in Portland, Maine, an opportunity to help the team.
Phoenix is 12th in the Western Conference standings, two points out of the final playoff spot.
