CASA GRANDE, AZ (CBS5) -
An 11-year-old girl living in a rural area near Casa Grande died after an accidental shooting involving another child at her home Tuesday night.
"When I went to the door, I said, 'Something really, really bad has happened because I have never seen anything like this before,'" said Carol Stewart, who lives across the road from Joan Plumb and her family.
Plumb was scrap booking with a girl as her 15-year-old brother showed his new .22-caliber rifle to a neighborhood friend when the shooting happened. The girl, her brother and the two neighborhood friends were in the living room and kitchen area of the trailer home.
"He (the 15-year-old) removed the clip from the rifle, set the weapon down on the table and this 11-year-old (boy) had picked it up and was handling the weapon and he discharged the firearm and that one round went into the head of this 11-year-old, Joan Plumb," said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu.
Joan's father was in the back bedroom and heard the shot. He ran to his daughter's aid and instructed the children to call 911.
Joan was taken to Casa Grande Medical Center and then flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where she died just before 11 p.m., according to Tamara Ingersoll of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
The mother and eldest child were not home at the time, Ingersoll said.
The house is just inside the Casa Grande city limits.
All three children in the home are reported to be trained in firearm safety and handling, Ingersoll said.
Ingersoll said the case will be submitted to the Pinal County Attorney's Office for review.
