Beachfront bar wants permit to get busloads of customers

OLD LYME, CT (WFSB) -

A popular beachfront bar is trying to kick start the summer season by hosting hundreds of University of Connecticut students for a night of celebration during senior week.

However, the problem is they'll all be on a bus, and the town of Old Lyme doesn't allow buses down by the beach for public safety reasons.

The owner of the Pavilion at Sound View is taking the town to court to get a special one-time permit for May 15 to allow buses to drop off and pick up some 300 UConn seniors.

The town officials said it's a public safety issue with the narrow streets.

However, Pavilion at Sound View owner Frank Maratta said it's off season in the middle of the week and won't be a problem.

Old Lyme First Selectman Bonnie Reemsnyder said she hopes to have an answer for Maratta when they meet on Monday might.

In the meantime, Maratta has filed a federal lawsuit in New Haven, pushing the issue of allowing buses on the roads leading to the town beach at Sound View.

According to the town officials, the plan calls for the buses to come down Swan Avenue and most likely drop the students off at the Pavilion.

The buses will then probably depart about 1 a.m. via Hartford Avenue.

"If they give us the date and the time, and it's a time with not a lot of traffic and not a lot of people, we feel we can get buses down there safely," Reemsnyder said. "We would likely approve it."

Eyewitness News made several attempts to get Maratta's side of the story, but no calls were returned for comment.

The issue will be discussed at the Old Lyme Selectmen's meeting at town hall on Monday at 7 p.m.
