HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Gov. Dannel Malloy and Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra joined mayors from across the country as part of the National Day to Demand Action.

Dozens of people attended a rally at Hartford City Hall Thursday morning.

It's one of more than 100 events expected to happen across the country as part of a nationwide effort to curb gun violence by urging lawmakers to vote for stricter gun laws.

"Twenty beautiful children and six ... educators have become a call to action for the nation. We need to keep faith with them," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who also attended the event.

The National Day to Demand Action was organized by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition. The group supports what they call "commonsense" gun laws, including comprehensive and enforceable background checks.

The nationwide event urged members of Congress to vote on stricter gun control legislation.

Thursday's event coincides with the Easter/Passover recess for Congress.

President Barrack Obama met with gun control advocates in Washington D.C. on Thursday where they held their own rally.

The United States Senate is expected to take up gun control legislation next month.

It does not include the assault weapons ban the White House is pushing for, but it does expand background checks.
