The Farmington Police Department is investigating shocking allegations of a newly unemployed science teacher having sex with a student at Miss Porter's School in town.
On Tuesday, Joseph Rajkumar, 42, made his first appearance in court after being accused of three sexual assault charges on a student.
He was charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault, which translates into having intercourse with a student, and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault, also involving a student.
Police won't say if the charges involve one or more students.
Up until early this month, Rajkumar was in the middle of his fourth year teaching at Miss Porter's School, which is a private boarding school. His last day at the school was March 4.
School officials aren't saying if Rajkumar was fired based on these charges or if he resigned when he stopped working at the school early this month.
Parents told Eyewitness News that the school notified them a few days ago announcing he was terminated.
"The head of the school, Dr. Windsor, sent us all an email, the parents an email, stating Joseph had been involved in sexual misconduct and he had been let go," said Timothy Smith, who is a parent of a Miss Porter's School. "The school doesn't tolerate any of that nonsense."
At Hartford Superior Court Tuesday, Rajkumar was told by the judge to stay away from students, staff and faculty at Miss Porter's School.
A woman at the court appearance for Rajkumar had no comment for Eyewitness News.
According to the school's website, Rajkumar, who also coached junior varsity soccer, track and robotics team, was hired in 2009 after teaching eight years of math and physics at the Conserve School in Wisconsin.
Less than a year later after he was hired, police believe the first alleged incident took place. He's accused of subjecting a student to sexual contact in May 2010.
Police said there was a second offense on Dec. 26, 2011, and a third on Feb. 1, 2012, with those charges indicating that he had sex with a student.
According to online records, at one point Rajkumar lived in this multi-family home on Maple Street, which is not far from the school's athletic fields. The property is owned by Miss Porter's.
According to reviews on Ratemyteacher.com, students said Rajkumar, who has three degrees from colleges in India, was tough in the classroom but well-liked.
"Joseph is an excellent teacher, but his physics class has to be one of the most difficult classes I ever took," one review stated.
"Awesome teacher. Also, really cool to have a chat with outside of class when seeing him around campus," another review said on the site.
Smith said his step-daughter was not a student of Rajkumar, but she ran track for him. Smith added that he knew him as an acquaintance.
"I'm very happy the school took this action and that they have a zero tolerance policy," he said.
The Farmington Police Department would not elaborate on the case and only told Eyewitness News their investigation is ongoing.
Court documents in the case will remain sealed until April 9.
The school hasn't told parents much more either.
"They're keeping it close to the vest and I don't know exactly what happened," Smith said. "I don't really feel the need to know. But, I'm happy they took action quickly."
