Driver collides with school bus, car split open

BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI (Toledo News Now) -

A driver was sent to the hospital after crashing into a school bus in Bedford Township, MI, Monday morning. It happened around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Douglas and Sterns roads, near the Bedford School complex.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Danna Gaines-Carpenter, 25, of Lambertville, MI, lost control of her Pontiac Grand Am and drove left of center, striking a Bedford Public Schools bus head-on. The impact from the crash split the car in half.

Officials say no one was on board at the time, except school bus driver, Debra Lake, 56, of Temperance, MI. The wreck occurred after students were already in school.

Gaines-Carpenter was transported to a hospital in Toledo with very serious injuries. She is listed in critical condition. Lake was not injured.  

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call 734-240-7493.
