Developers in New London are planning the first new construction in the Fort Trumbull neighborhood since the city announced more than a dozen years ago a redevelopment plan that led to a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling on eminent domain.
Developer Irwin Stillman told The Day of New London that Riverbank Construction will begin the first phase of a 103-unit town house development called Village on the Thames this spring.
The city approved development plans in 2000 and wanted to take properties by eminent domain to make way for office space, housing, a hotel and other projects. But neighborhood residents sued, leading to a 2005 U.S. Supreme Court decision saying the city had the right to seize the properties for economic development.
A Coast Guard Museum is also planned.
