PAYSON, AZ (AP) -

Authorities in northern Arizona say a Mesa man is dead after an all-terrain vehicle accident in Payson.

Gila County Sheriff's officials identify the victim as 49-year-old Richard Melcher.

They received a 911 call about 4 p.m. Monday about an ATV wreck in the area of Rim Trail.

Whispering Pines Fire Department personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Authorities say Melcher wasn't wearing a helmet, but did have experience riding an ATV.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but sheriff's officials say it doesn't appear that drug or alcohol use is a factor.
