MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
Mesa police used a stun gun to subdue a man wearing "war paint" who threatened to shoot his neighbors and police officers early Monday morning.
Neighbors became concerned after Matthew Curt Andersen, 30, was heard yelling, throwing things inside and threatening to shoot people at his townhome near University Drive and Alma School Road about 11:30 p.m. Sunday evening and again about 1:10 a.m. Monday, said Diana Williams of the Mesa Police Department.
Williams said Andersen police knew Andersen owned throwing knives in the past and once greeted police at his door with a sword.
Williams said a neighbor recorded threats Andersen is believed to have made, and a police sergeant coaxed Andersen out of his townhome.
But Andersen made specific threats to shoot officers and they used a stun gun on him.
Williams said Andersen had barricaded his front door with a mattress and his patio and that he had applied "war paint" to his face. Officers also saw blood on his hands and pants, she said.
Police said they found a broken window by the front door and blood on the ground, and a mattress barricading the front door. They also found a loaded sawed-off shotgun with extra shells in a side saddle, a high-powered rifle and a handgun next to the front door, Williams said.
More firearms, pieces of tactical gear and swords were found throughout the townhome, Williams said.
Andersen was booked into jail on charges of threatening and intimidating, disorderly conduct and weapon possession by a prohibited possessor.
