STEUBENVILLE, OH (WOIO) -
Judge finds teens in Steubenville rape case delinquent, the juvenile court equivalent of guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl after an alcohol-fueled party in August 2012.
Crying could be heard in the courtroom after the judge's verdict.
Ma'Lik Richmond and Trent Mays were star players on the storied Steubenville Big Red football team. Steubenville is a football-crazed town, and the anger over the way the case was handled had to with the claim that their status on the team led to delays in prosecution.
It wasn't until ten days after the incident that the teens were arrested. A video and pictures of the incident was posted on social media sites.
The judge sentenced the teens immediately. Both defendants are to be committed to the Department of Youth Services for minimum of 1 year. Trent Mays received two years to be served consecutively. Ma'Lik Richmond will serve one year. They are to have no contact with the victim until the age of 21. They will also be registered as juvenile sex offenders.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine held a press conference to discuss the trial and the entire investigation of the case. DeWine spoke to the victim and to her family. He also mentioned the role social media played in the case.
DeWine said, "This community desperately needs to have this behind them but this community also desperately needs to know justice was done and that no stone was left unturned."
