NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A woman has been charged in the fatal shooting death of her estranged husband earlier this year in which she initially told police she acted in self-defense.

Tiffany Spence, 31, is charged with first-degree murder in the March 13 death of Fabian Spence near a home in the 1700 block of Stonewater Drive in Hermitage.

Tiffany Spence called 911 to report the shooting and told detectives that when she went to the home to drop off the couple's two sons, ages 7 and 5, an argument ensued on the front porch. She said that during the argument, Fabian Spence attempted to pull out a pistol from his rear waistband.

Police say evidence at the scene indicated otherwise, and investigators say the woman later admitted she planned the shooting.

Family of Fabian Spence told Channel 4 in March that they were not buying the story told by the woman who shot their loved one, even then.

"How do you wrestle a gun away from somebody who's almost twice your size, who's also a security guard?" said Tanya Carr, Fabian Spence's cousin. "How do you wrestle a gun away and shoot him in the back, and call it self-defense?"

More than a decade ago, Fabian Spence came to America with the dream of a better life. Family members said he worked two jobs to help provide his children, but his Jamaican roots never left him.

"I'll remember him as my unseen travel companion at this point," said his brother, Ricardo Spence.
