Toddler found wandering neighborhood in soaked pajamas
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Wind chills were near freezing Tuesday, so one could imagine the concern when people found a toddler wandering their Donelson neighborhood barefoot in soaking wet pajamas.
While the caring neighbors saved the day, some still have questions about how it happened.
The toddler will be just fine, and his mother apparently didn't realize he could open the door. But one of the neighbors who helped Tuesday said that should serve as a warning for every parent.
"Obviously, the condition of this child was where you needed to take action, and it just surprised me to ever find a child on the street without shoes, wet and soaking," said neighbor Shiro Onedera.
A resident found the 2-year-old shivering and soaking wet in a cul-de-sac called Steamboat Court.
Onedera, who lives next door, called 911 but told police the baby was not in immediate danger.
That might explain why it took an officer more than a hour to get there to sort things out. In fact, Onedera had to call 911 a second time and express concerns about the mother's well-being across the street.
He had knocked, but couldn't get an answer. Then, when police arrived, they approached the toddler's home and found the front door cracked.
They entered and yelled "Police," and when the little boy's mother came downstairs she pulled her headphones from her ears and seemed surprised to find out her 2-year-old was not in his room.
Apparently, she didn't hear anything, and it appears she simply made a mistake.
"Maybe it's just a one-off thing, but thank God, you know, our other neighbors that found him, found him," Onedera said. "It was a community coming together, for the benefit of a child in need."
Police called the Department of Children's Services, and a caseworker will follow up.
Police will not investigate, though, considering this a bad mistake and hopefully a lesson learned for the toddler's mother.
