Missing fire truck sent from Hartford to Jamaica found in wrong city

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A fire truck that was donated by the city of Hartford to its sister city in Jamaica has been located and officials may know why it never made it to its destination.

In 2008, the City Council passed a resolution to send a 100-foot ladder truck to Morant Bay in Jamaica as part of the Sister City Program, which promotes international cooperation between communities.

However, the Eyewitness News I-Team learned that the fire truck is being housed in Portmore, which is 30 miles away from Morant Bay, and not being used by the town.

"I only heard about Morant Bay three months ago," said Walter Benjamin, who is the vice president of the Caribbean Trade Council of Hartford.

Benjamin was hired to bring the ladder truck to Morant Bay for training purposes, but it never got there when it was delivered in 2011.

Benjamin said his nonprofit was simply told to give the ladder truck to the Jamaican government and the Jamaican Fire Brigade, which is a national organization overseeing all the country's fire departments.

According to the Caribbean Trade Council of Hartford, Andrew Lawrence, who is a Hartford police sergeant, is under investigation for the incident.

Shawn Wooden, who is the president of the Hartford City Council, is now questioning why a second fire truck is being sent to Morant Bay.

"I've asked the mayor to delay any further actions with respect to delivering that second fire truck, until we can get enough answers, as to what happened, before we proceed," Wooden said. "Certainly, this is very troubling."
