Crews investigate fire at rooming house in Milford

MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A late-night fire displaced more than a dozen people at a rooming house in Milford and investigators spent Thursday morning trying to determine the cause.

Police have been at the building throughout the night keeping watch over the building after the old, two-story home went up in flames after 10 p.m.

Emergency crews responded to reports of the fire at 79 North St., which is the location for the Brismont Lodge, and when they arrived flames could be seen coming from inside.

"I didn't think anything of (the fire alarm)," said David Darrah, of Milford. "Sometimes (residents) will burn something in the kitchen and the alarm will go off. I went down the stairs and went out the front door. When I went around the back, the back corner room was just glowing."

There's no word on what caused the fire to break out, but officials with the Milford Fire Department said the flames forced 12 residents from the home.

"It's been a rooming home for quite some time," said Mark Gabrielle. "I've lived here 20 years and I know it was there before that."

The landlord was able to relocate most of the people inside, and the Connecticut chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting as well.

"I left everything in there," Darrah said. "I just left with what I've got on."
