A 92-year-old woman was killed after a fire broke out at a senior housing complex in Thompson early Wednesday morning.
Officials from Quinebaug Valley Dispatch said the fire started at Gladys Green on Riverside Drive around 6:30 a.m. Upon arrival, the apartment was engulfed in flames, officials said.
The two-alarm fire was brought under control after about 20 minutes and the fire was contained to one apartment.
The victim was identified by family members at Anita Jarveis. They said she lived in the complex, which is run by the housing authority in Thompson, for 20 years.
"I'm happy she is where she wants to be," said Sarah Deslongchamps.
Deslongchamps said her great grandmother Jarveis celebrated her 92nd birthday and was surrounded by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
"She had no idea she said she just fell and said come pick me up," Deslongchamps said.
Family members said Jarveis pushed her life-alert button early this morning, possibly not even knowing there was a fire in her home. Deslongchamps said her father rushed over and tired to save his grandmother, but it was too late.
"Before the firemen even got here, he tried to go in broke a window with a lawn chair of all things," Deslongchamps said. "But the one firefighter who was here wouldn't let him in."
Emergency crews from several surrounding communities also responded to the scene to provide mutual aid to Thompson crews, and the state fire marshal is at the scene of the deadly blaze to investigate.
"It's sad but she's pass on with her husband and her daughter," said Nancy Deslongchamps. "And she's been ready to be with him for a long time."
