(Source: CBS 5 News) Arizona Diamondbacks' President Derrick Hall announced the major league team donated $5,000 to the Pinal Mountain Little League after a fire destroyed much of its equipment.
CLAYPOOL, AZ (CBS5) -
Donations have been pouring in since CBS 5 News first aired a story about a youth baseball league's equipment shed and concession stand that burned to the ground.
At the Pinal Mountain Little League fields in Claypool, near Miami-Globe, the damage is still obvious, with melted bats, tees and balls on the ground, along with a burned refrigerator, cash register and much more.
The Diamondbacks literally stepped up to the plate and donated $5,000 to the league after the story aired Monday night.
"I immediately texted Sean and told him we would be willing to give $5,000 to hopefully get them started," said Arizona Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall.
The CBS 5 News team recorded Hall talking to the kids and then showed them the video while they were in class Tuesday at Bejarano Middle School.
"Don't hang your heads. Look at this as an opportunity now to purchase new equipment. Look at this as an opportunity to get the community involved and to turn this field around because we got many more years ahead for you to play and enjoy yourselves on those fields," Hall said.
The kids responded by saying things such as, "That was really cool," "I think it's awesome," and "It's awesome that he paid for all that stuff."
"It helps keep them focused, and it helps keep them out of trouble," said Sandy Rodriguez, a fifth-grade teacher and vice president of the league.
Getting their ballpark back is like getting their lives back in Claypool.
"The fact that we got outside of Globe-Miami and got some encouragement and got some help is really, really wonderful," Rodriguez said.
The league's board members also said donations have been coming in from all over the Valley.
