GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies are investigating an attack on a Greenville County woman's horse after she found it had been attacked with severe cuts to its face.
Greenville County deputies said Jan Hudson owned the horse and kept it at 438 Belvue Rd. in Travelers Rest, along with a donkey. When she went to feed the animals, she found the horse's face mutilated, though the donkey was not injured.
Hudson said there's not a mean bone 24-year-old lovable old Smoky Joe's body. He's maintained his calm temper throughout his healing, not even jerking his face as Hudson secured his bandages. His injuries are so severe that raw bone is exposed on his face. His healing hasn't been easy, the bandages cause him to scratch and they start to come undone.
As of Tuesday, there have been no tips to solve this case to lead to an arrest, and there's only one eyewitness. That witness has been inseparable from Smoky Joe for the last five years - the donkey named Andy that shares his pasture.
When Smoky Joe was removed from their pasture for treatment, Hudson said it was hard for Andy to be without his injured companion.
"Andy had a fit the whole time Smoky was out, he was running the fence," said Hudson. "He finally calmed down a little bit but he would not leave this fence so he could keep an eye on Smoke."
Who attacked Smoky Joe remains a mystery. Their pasture is far off the road in Travelers Rest. Hudson is outraged and heartbroken.
She said Smoky Joe is improving and now she wants whoever's responsible to pay.
"I know you don't have a heart, you don't have a conscious because you couldn't do this," said Hudson. "But when the police get you, you better hope they get you first.
A veterinarian checked out the horse and said the injuries were not consistent with an attack from another animal, deputies said.
The attack happened sometime between 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Anyone who has any information on the attack is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 864-23-CRIME.
