(Source: CBS 5 News) A man suffering from a medical condition lost control of his car and struck several homes and vehicles in Sun City on Monday morning.
SUN CITY, AZ (CBS5) -
William Bischoff was sound asleep in his Sun City house when he was awakened by what he thought was a clap of thunder about 3:10 a.m. Monday.
He looked out his back door, but didn't see any lightning he said. So he went to his front porch, where he was struck by a bolt from the blue.
"I saw my van was crooked and thought, 'You've got to be kidding me,'" and there was a car wedged into it," Bischoff said just after dawn Monday.
Inside the car was an 88-year-old man who had suffered a medical condition and was searching for a hospital when his car accelerated up to 100 mph before striking street signs, several homes and vehicles and coming to rest in Bischoff's front yard.
A firefighting crew was leaving Banner-Boswell Medical Center in Sun City when members saw the car speeding on 103rd Avenue, according to a department spokesman.
The crew radioed in the incident and followed the car, watching it hit several stop signs, run through a fence and come to rest after hitting Bischoff's house. No one in the house was hurt.
"It's pretty scary if you think about," Bischoff said. "If my van hadn't been there, he would have taken out my bedroom. He was headed right toward it, right toward it."
A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman said several homes and vehicles were struck by the driver, who told deputies and emergency crews he was looking for a hospital when the accident happened near 103rd and Olive avenues about 5:45 a.m.
Firefighters said the man suffered only minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment of his condition.
"Don't usually get up 'til about 3:30 or 4:45, and even thought it's only a half-hour difference, that's quite a bit when you're my age and need to rest," Bischoff said.
Bischoff said he might have a badly damaged van, but it served a purpose: Bischoff can live to get that extra half-hour's sleep another day.
