EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
While some Connecticut schools will remain closed until next week, others are trying to make a go of it in less than ideal conditions.
That has some parents concerned enough that they won't let their children take the school bus.
"I think the sidewalk is not wide enough and the roads, too, have been blocked," said one unidentified parent.
East Hartford is one of those communities that are open, and the parent complaints are not unique to just that town.
Not every parent is pleased with children having to navigate narrow sidewalks, if they are even shoveled at all, on the way to a bus stop.
In many cases the school bus stops aren't shoveled, either.
It may not be as much of a concern with high schoolers that can be easily seen, but smaller elementary school students have been often seen in the company of their parents at the bus stop.
One parent in East Hartford said the bus stop just wasn't safe enough, and so she drove her child to school.
"The sidewalks are kind of gone and so the bus stops, the kids would have to stand in the streets to wait for the bus, which really isn't safe," said Amy Bennett-Hall of East Hartford. "So that's why I'm driving my kids to school."
East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc said because of the historic nature of this storm, they are asking people to take their time with their sidewalks, but clear them if they can.
The mayor added families need to understand they may need to drive their kids to school if they can for the next few days.
