KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
The Westminster Kennel Club dog show happening this week in New York City is missing a prominent dog show trainer.
Peter Belmont, 69, He was murdered in his Kansas City, KS, home near 115th Street and Leavenworth Road on Dec. 16.
His sister, Kathleen Belmonte, lives in Massachusetts and spoke over the phone about her brother. While Peter and Kathleen's birth certificates spell their last names differently, it doesn't change how close the siblings were.
"If you saw the inside of his house, the awards and ribbons, it would really take you back. It was just incredible. Incredible," Kathleen Belmonte said.
No arrests have been made in the case, and Belmont's family is stepping up with more cash to help catch his killer.
"Yeah, Peter would have been there. He knew everyone there. That was his thing," Belmonte said. "His dogs were his whole life, even as a kid."
An Afghan hound was one of Belmont's show dogs that got out of his yard after his murder and was found injured. It's now being taken care of by a new owner.
Belmont was known internationally for dedicating his life to training and competing with the exotic Afghan hounds.
Two months after his murder, his family still has no idea who would take his life.
"None. None. Terrible. Terrible. Motive - I don't know, I don't have a mind of a killer, who knows. Who knows why people do these things. I have no idea," Belmonte said when asked if her family has any indication of who would kill her brother.
Kansas City, KS, police said Belmont's van that was taken from his home along with other personal belongings has been recovered.
His family wants justice so they pooled their money together and have increased the Crimestoppers reward money to $5,000.
"Whatever it takes, and if you know anything and want your conscience cleared, you know. I don't know how you sleep with that at night, with that on your head or the person who did this. I don't know why. I don't know the motive. I have no idea," Belmonte said. "My family is deeply concerned and saddened by Peter's death, and we felt that this would help the KCK city police."
Officials with the Crimestoppers TIPS Hotline said that, so far, only two tips have come in about Belmont's death. His family hopes the increased reward money will help push more calls to come in.
