NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

The recovery from Blizzard Charlotte continues in New Britain with schools remaining closed and the struggle to get every street open goes on.

Now reinforcements have been brought in from the National Guard.

Like many older Connecticut cities with cramped streets to begin with, 2 to 3 feet of snow makes it impossible to get around.

The Main Street bridge is the first spot a team of a half-dozen members of the Rhode Island National Guard are helping to clear. By noon there were 10 guardsmen and women with another 20 coming to the city.

The team worked side by side with city crews that have been going non-stop since Blizzard Charlotte dumped several feet of snow in the Hardware City.

The National Guard brought in a pair of pay loaders and they were put in to action right away.

"We're very pleased that the (Gov. Dannel Malloy) has sent National Guard units in here to help as well," said Mayor Tim O'Brien."That's part of the request we made through the emergency operations center."

O'Brien said that he's hopeful that by the end of Tuesday, every street in the city will be EMS ready.

"We need to be able to restore the city center to normal and being able to clear snow from places like this on the Main Street bridge is essential for that," he said.

It's not perfect, but at least passable.

"With all the snow that came down, it's been pretty hard for the city itself," said Michael Morales of Bristol. "You know what I mean for all the cities, actually."

In Hartford, members of the Connecticut National Guard were clearing snow on Prospect Street.

There's no timetable for how long the Rhode Island National Guard will remain in the city, but O'Brien told Eyewitness News that city workers have days worth of snow removal ahead.
