Family forced out by two-alarm fire in New Haven

Posted: Updated:

Fire crews continue to investigate what caused a fire at a multi-family home in New Haven early Tuesday morning that displaced one family.

According to officials, the fire broke out at the Harding Place home around 3 a.m.

When crews arrived at the scene of the fire, they said they found flames coming from the upper floors of the home.

Officials said they believe the fire started on the second floor of the home before spreading to the third floor and eventually into the walls.

Crews were able to get the fire knocked down after about 20 minutes; however, it re-ignited on the roof of the home a short time later.

Fire victim Jaclyn Norman said her boyfriend warned the family about the fire.

"He had just left," she said. "He probably wasn't gone no more than an hour or two, and he came back and knocked on the window and got everyone out of there."

Officials said the residents of the home got out safely; however, firefighters did help rescue some family pets.

"I've been calling around right now, and it's still early, so I'm going to be doing that all day today," said Norman.

The Connecticut chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing for the next few days.

Fire officials said there is a lot of damage to the home and it is believed to be a total loss.

"Everybody is alive, yes. It's just water damage, fire damage," Norman said. "We will get through it."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the city's arson team was at the scene of the fire.

"Our detectors didn't go off, so when we woke up, I seen the smoke and all that," Norman said. "It was just nasty, smokey."
