Some Connecticut lawmakers looked at the possibility of increasing the speed limit on some state roads from 65 mph to 75 mph.
The transportation committee discussed the bill during a meeting at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford Monday morning.
The maximum speed limit was last increased 15 year ago from 55 mph to 65 mph.
Connecticut lawmakers are considering the increase because 15 states have raised their speed limits to 75 mph. Utah has a maximum speed limit on state roads of 80 mph and Texas has 85 mph as its max.
The closest state to Connecticut to increase its maximum speed limit on state roads to 75 mph was Maine.
However, research by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program found during the last increase that there was a three percent increase in deaths and a 23 percent likelihood that someone in the crash would be killed.
"It's fast enough now," said Bob Colangelo of Wethersfield. "We don't need to drive that fast."
Fines for speeding and talking on a cell phone while driving could be raised for Connecticut drivers.
Fines for speeding violations could increase from $150 to $200.
Current fines for talking while driving are now $125 for a first offense, $250 for a second offense and $400 for a third offense. However, they could increase to $200 for a first offense, $300 for a second offense and $500 for a third offense.
Lawmakers told Eyewitness News that they think raising the fines will be a deterrent.
Kathleen McGrail of Glastonbury said she does not speak on her phone because she gets yelled at.
"My kids tell me not to do it," she said.
Lawmakers are also considering a bill would require Department of Transportation officials to change Men At Work sings to read People At Work around construction zones, one that calls for an annual safety inspections for cars, and a another that would place tolls on Connecticut's highways.
