Willimantic police have arrested a mother who they say was intoxicated early Monday morning with her two young children in the vehicle.
Officers were on a Super Bowl Sunday DUI enforcement patrol in the area of Jackson Street around 2 a.m. when they observed a van running in the driveway of a residence. Police said the officers had observed the same van running in the driveway about 30 minutes earlier.
Police approached the vehicle and found the driver, 31-year-old Veronica Cruz of Willimantic, slumped over the steering wheel.
Cruz's two children, ages five and six, were asleep in the back seat of the van.
Police said it took several minutes to wake Cruz, and once they did, they observed she was disoriented and had a odor of alcohol on her breath.
Cruz was issued a field sobriety test and was arrested for driving under the influence, police said.
She was also charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor.
Cruz was released on a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 14.
