EAST HAMPTON, CT (WFSB) -

A man who is accused of planting a fake bomb at the East Hampton Middle School was indicted on federal charges.

Police said Sean Doran, 20, and Kayla Sypek, 20, both of East Hampton, allegedly left what appeared to be a bomb on the ground near the front entrance of the building on  Jan. 12

School custodians discovered the device and even though it looked fake, they called police.

After securing the building and searching the area, police reviewed school security footage, which revealed Doran and Sypek leaving the device at the school around 1:30 a.m.

Doran and Sypek were arrested Jan. 14 and charged with reckless endangerment, threatening and breach of peace.

On Friday, Doran was charged with one count of intentionally conveying false or misleading information. He appeared in Hartford Federal Court, pleaded not guilty and was released on $50,000 bond.

"The indictment of Mr. Doran should be a warning to those individuals who choose to disrupt and threaten everyday public life, hoax or no hoax," said Kimberly K. Mertz, who is the FBI special agent in charge of the case. "Placing a hoax bomb in a public location is criminal. Placing it outside a school is absolutely appalling."

If convicted, Doran could face a maximum of five years and a fine up to $250,000.

FBI continues to work with the East Hampton Police Department, the New Haven Police Department and the Connecticut State Police on the case.

"The FBI and its law enforcement partners will work tirelessly to bring to justice those responsible for such criminal conduct," Mertz said.
