Shotgun shell found on Willington school bus

WILLINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

Officials with the Willington superintendent's office said a local school was locked down early Friday morning after a shotgun shell was found on a school bus.

Officials said the lockdown was ordered at Hall Memorial School around 7:30 a.m. when the discovery was made.

"It had fallen out, and another student picked it up and they knew what it was and that it wasn't an appropriate thing to have on the bus," said Willington Superintendent of Schools David Harding. "It was actually passed up along the seats to the driver."

All of the 32 students on the bus were held on board, and students inside the school were kept indoors. All the students were brought in for an assembly to stop any rumors.

School officials said a 10-year-old student finally admitted to bringing the shotgun shell to school on the bus, and police are now investigating.

He is not facing criminal charges and state police have decided to let the school handle the incident. The bullet belonged to his parents.

The lockdown was lifted around 8:15 a.m., and all parents were notified of the incident.

"You take a deep breathe and a sigh of relief," said parent Laura Brenger of Willington "But, when you first hear the words of lockdown, you think of everything else that's been going on and then you kind of get a little bit of what those other parents might have been going through."

Town leaders said a similar incident in Stafford Springs last week already had them thinking about situations like this.

"Anytime things happen in other towns we do stop and think what would we do if it happened here," said Willington First Selectwoman Christina Mailhos. "So, that's just a good process to go through, to think of the what ifs?"

Students in grades four through eight attend Hall Memorial School.
