The Connecticut Department of Higher Education is offering informational seminars for students who were affected by the sudden closure of Butler Business and Sawyer schools in Connecticut.
The Sawyer School in Hartford and Hamden, along with the Butler Business School in Bridgeport closed during the final weekend of December without notice, which left about 1,200 students that paid tuition scrambling and teachers without jobs.
According to the Connecticut Office of Higher Education, a school is required to give a 60-day notice if its closing. The state department also only received a brief email about the closing right before the schools shutdown.
The sessions will be held at three different locations and dates:
Second session - Feb. 7 - Gateway Community College, New Haven (Room N100)
Third session - Feb. 8 - Housatonic Community College, Bridgeport (Beacon Hall 214)
Any students attending the sessions are advised to bring a photo ID with their federal PIN Number and must check in with security at the facility. The sessions are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Students can receive their copies of their transcripts, applications for tuition reimbursement and federal financial aid loan discharge at the sessions.
The following schools will be participating in the sessions:
Branford Hall Career Institute
Fox Institute of Business, Inc.
Lincoln Technical Institute
Porter & Chester Institute
Gateway Community College
Housatonic Community College
Central Connecticut State University
"We are very grateful to all of the participating schools and colleges for so quickly stepping up to the plate to help these students," stated Jane A. Ciarleglio, who is the executive director of Connecticut's Office of Higher Education.
The State of Connecticut's Office of Higher Education is urging students impacted by the school closures to call the Education & Employment Information Center at 1-800-842-0229 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
