Crews work to repair gas leak in Newtown

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Emergency crews in Newtown worked to repair a gas leak Wednesday night that occurred along Route 6 earlier in the morning.

Route 6, also known as Mt. Pleasant Road, has been closed from Route 25 to the Bethel town line because of the leak. According to officials, the gas line runs all the way to Danbury.

The leak was located below underground electrical lines, so officials said power needs to be cut before the road can be dug up and repair work can begin.

The gas also needed to be shut off because pressure underground started to build up, and that pressure needs to be released.

Excavation began in the area of the leak Wednesday afternoon.

The relighting of customers will begin early Thursday morning by technicians.
