Four rural churches in Dickson County have been broken into during the month of January. In one case, the thief stole the communion wine and bread.
James Farmer of the Soules Chapel United Methodist Church said no one noticed the break-in until the Sunday sermon was getting under way. The preacher looked up at the clock and discovered it was missing.
"The preacher asked if we were trying to send him a message that he was preaching too long or not long enough," Farmer said.
Then someone noticed an inexpensive painting was also missing.
When church members went to the back room, they found a window had been smashed out.
The burglar took a half gallon of wine and the communion bread from the refrigerator.
Dickson County Detective Craig Stockman said some evidence was recovered from the series of church thefts but no arrests have been made yet.
