Dickson sheriff, country star unveil safe driver program

DICKSON, TN (WSMV) -

A new plan to make the roads safer for teen drivers could have some of them winning big prizes.

Dickson County's sheriff and country music star Craig Morgan unveiled a new driving safety contest Wednesday at Dickson County High School.

Students who write an essay and pledge to make changes to drive safer wind up in a contest to win a limo rental for this year's prom.

Along the way, they also have a chance to win prizes donated by several businesses in town.

"Our main goal is to save lives," said Sheriff Jeff Bledsoe. "With all of the technology we have these days, with cell phones and other items in the vehicle that could take our focus off the roadway, we have to be cautious and know what a huge responsibility it is when we operate a vehicle."

As part of the program, teen drivers cannot get a citation and they also have to stay accident-free.

"It's super important. We've had a lot of deaths in the last year with the students' driving, and I think it's important that if there's anything that we can do to prevent that, that we should do that as a community. We shouldn't wait for someone else to step up and do it," Morgan said.

The new plan comes at a good time in Dickson County. According to the sheriff, a recent spike in crashes cost several teens their lives and currently outpaces the rest of the state.
